Boys Fall Volleyball

McLean Youth Volleyball (MYV) runs a boys volleyball league during the Fall season for youth athletes in the greater McLean and Vienna areas. For the Fall 2019 season, the MYV Boys Volleyball program attracted over 70 boys and had 7 teams (2 ES & 5 MS).

The program runs during the Fall season (mid-September thru mid-November).  MYV Boys participants in the NoVA Boys Volleyball League  that includes boys teams from other youth volleyball programs in the area (Braddock Road Youth, Chantilly Youth, Vienna Youth and the St. James).  The Fall 2019 season had a total of 170+ boys across 17 teams (7 ES & 10 MS). Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the fall 2020 season was cancelled.

The next full season of Boys Volleyball is fall 2021. Registration opens in late July 2021.  All indications are that gym access and level of interest will return to the pre-COVID norm.

Target Participants

  • Boys Grades 4th-6th - Elementary School League
  • Boys Grades 7th-8th - Middle School League

(High school boys can play volleyball in the separate NVHSBVL - Northern Virginia High School Boys Volleyball League which has teams for most local high schools)

Our Philosophy

  • The Boys program exists to provide boys with the opportunity to play and enjoy volleyball in a competitive yet safe and fun environment. To this end, we encourage all those interested, regardless of experience and ability, to join our program and play on our teams.
  • If you don't know how to play, we will teach you.  There are no tryouts - all those who register are placed on a team.
  • We promote maximizing ball "touches" as the best way for players to master volleyball skills, and participating in competitive league matches as the best way to learn and enjoy the game.

Program Scope

  • The boys volleyball season runs from mid-September through mid-November
  • The first phase of the season involves clinics aimed at developing foundational volleyball skills such as passing, setting, hitting and serving. Experienced clinic instructors run the clinics.
  • In the second phase, teams meet once a week to practice and once a week to play league matches.
  • At the end of the season, playoffs are held to determine season champions.
  • A few friendly matches against teams from other boys volleyball programs in the area may also be scheduled.

Player Commitment

  • The commitment level is intended to be student-friendly and multi-sport friendly.
  • 1 practice on a weekday for 1.5 hours between 6-9pm at McLean and Vienna area school gyms.
  • 1 match (3 games) for 1 hour each week on Saturdays at McLean and Vienna area school gyms.
  • The day, time and location of team practices are determined by coaches
  • During registration, players can indicate preferred practice days and locations -- our schedulers will try their best to accommodate.
  • To support carpooling, we make the effort to form teams around school affiliations and teammate requests. Participants are also welcome to propose a team change if the practice time conflicts with other commitments.
